HMS Hannibal
« on: Sunday | 22. November 2015 | 16:19 hrs »
Hi everybody.  Just about to return to RC Scale after an absence of 25 years.  Looking at the Deans Marine range and have decided on the Hannibal.  Has anyone out there built one? If so, is there anything I should look out for?  I have built several kits and a few scratch in the past.  This will be my first at such a small scale but my other project, an intermittent labour of love, the Victory has lots of fiddly bits (not least the 3500+ copper plates on the hull) so am used to "small stuff".  Any advice would be appreciated. :smiley1:

Hi Buswab, as you have built from a kit and scratch you should have no trouble with a Deans kit, I have built three Deans ships Solebay , Bramble, and Zulu, all have build logs on this forum,  Deans kits build into good boats and sail well if you are going down the RC route, I think it's fair to say the kits do need a fair amount of input from the modeller, one of the reasons I like them and they taught me a lot, so much so that I'm now scratch building ships, hope all goes well what ever you decide.  ^^^

Thanks for that Ron & Colin. Looks like it'll be a bit more than a weekend's work then. Good job I won't be working for a living.

That's some thread to work through but some interesting "asides".  Making me think about 'real' planking too, hmmmm.  We'll see.

OK. Bitten the bullet. Big box of boat and small box of hardware sitting patiently waiting to come together into a coherent whole. Still finishing the "dry dock" and extending the worktop area. Hannibal is a tad bigger than the Victory and my son wants to build his Amethyst there at the same time.  All will be well but he's not a Pink Floyd fan.

Big thanks to Ron.  Spent a very pleasant 3 hours with him talking about all sorts.  Haven't seen him for 25 years but would never have known.  So knowledgeable and enthusiastic (even after all these years).  Last time we boated together was the Stevenage Scale Marathon.  I had the Atlantic Conveyor, the only boat bigger than Ron's at 118.5 inches and displacing 350 lbs.  A bump by carrier didn't worry us.

Purchased all that I needed and nothing that I didn't, thanks to Ron's "what do you want that for, you wont need it".  Looking forward to the Xmas weekend now.
