Topic: HMS Vanquisher

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone was building of has built the Vanquisher kit as I am having big problems following the instructions. I have built the Precedent PT 109 and the Dumas Chris Craft runabout so I am not a complete beginner. Both had step by step instructions and diagrams, but I am finding so much missing from these directions and the sketches and pictures are (to my mind) vague. For instance, it does not explain how to construct the framework at the top of the funnels and I cannot see anything supplied in the trays with the fittings so I am assuming I have to make it out of brass rod or something. And then, what is it supposed to look like?

This is my first Deans Marine build and I am sure that if I ever get it finished the next one will prove to be a lot easier! I hope!!

Anywho; if any one has some nice detailed build instructions of their own or better yet some pictures it would be much appreciated.

I've built the HMS Cossack kit which I guess is similar, for the funnel cages I made them out of brass wire (was supplied with the kit) - stretch it straight with pliers, cut 8 lengths of it to size and assemble a starfish shape, solder/superglue together. Then bend a circle or teardrop shape for the outside, again solder/superglue on. Then trim off the excess length of the starfish/bend the ends to form legs to support the cage. I copied the cage from the plan view of the plans in the kit. I hope this makes sense!
A good reference for the V&W destroyers is the 'Man o' War' Series number 2.

Thank you James!  I think I get what you mean and your explanation was clearer than the plans. I know that there will be a certain amount of improvisation but I have had this thing since xmas 2014 and have only recently had the guts to try and get on with it. I enjoy building models but have a bit of an OCD complex in getting it right.

Some of this stuff will seem simple to most semi/experienced craftsmen, but it is driving me crazy! I mean parts printed on the sheets that are never mentioned in the directions!

Oh well. Onwards and more gluing! I hope you will not mind if I can ask for more advice.

i think James has pointed you in the right direction... i have done something similar with a ship that I am building at the moment, I could put some photos up if you need them, but as I said there not of the Vanquisher..

as you have noticed there is a lot of thinking and looking twice, plus getting a lot of background information is required to build the Class/type of ship that you have taken on.. or for that matter any of the range..

the instructions are more of a general guide and not a rule to be built by... that, in its own rights, is the best thing about Deans Kits..

if you have any major Problems, a short mail to the Deans Workshops works wonders.. !!
and of course... ask more question.. we will try to advise the best we modellers can

Hi Colin,

Thanks for that. The picture you sent was very helpful, but neither of my blasted funnels have those 4 convenient little holes that yours does . However, it will allow me to proceed another step further.

I'm sure I'll be back on here with more inane problems.
