Its been great building the Fairwind and even more fun sailing her. The size of the model is perfect, not too heavy to lift in and out of the water (about 6 kgs) and easy to fit in the back of my car. It handles beautifully in the water and manouvers like a dream with the bow thruster.
We have used Evergreen 1/4 round plastic strips on the top sides of the hull to create that thick and round solid look. We also used Plastruct H0 stanchions around the bridge which worked fine and saved a lot of time.
We also fitted port/starbord navigation LED.s and light on the bridge for dark evening sailing back home.
The hatch cover needs some reinforcement on the underside (we used 2 strips of obechi 5x5 mm glued along the underside) as it bends upwards in cold wheather. The engine produces heat while the top surface cools from the cold air. The thin styrene plastic will then bend upwards. Easy to fix !
We use two 2kg lead weights used for diving as ballast.
