Hi,

Nice build ! do you plan to add LED ligthing, maybe animate the cranes and a smoke generator.
You could even leave a cargo bay open, that would be cool.
Why do I say that ? well I got the same kit here (but not started yet). And I would like to turn it into a locomotive transport like the one below

I do plan to add some lights. The layout already has a power bus for 1.5V and 12V lighting. I plan to use 1.5V micro bulbs as I have a stock of those on hand.

I made the hatches closed as the ship will be loaded with wind mill blades and towers on the top of the hatches. However, the loads can be removed if I want to switch it up for photos.

I finished most of the details for the compass deck. I made the antenna using various pieces of brass tubing, an etched ladder and some spare LEDs.

I added the bow details, cranes, lifeboat ramp and utility crane. I made a new life boat launch ramp and utility crane on the stern. For main cranes I used a modified version of the cranes I saw on a commercial ship.  Just a few more times at the stern and hatch covers and it will be ready for the model railroad layout.

I finished the model this weekend, though more detail is always possible. I need to move on to the rest of the layout. This model ship will be featured in my next book on marine Terminals and wharves. It will be published in 2017.

I will post more info on the marine terminal layout on my blog at www.usmrr.blogspot.com

Take care,
Bernard Kempinski

How did you make the fences?

They are photo etchings that I had made from stainless steel. They are now available from Alkem Scale Models (see www.alkemscalemodels.com). Modern ports are basically large parking lots surrounded by fences. So having realistic fences was a priority.

I really enjoyed the building the ship model. Since I did not know much about ships, I had to research every step on the way. So it took longer than planned. I also learned a lot.

Now, I am contemplating expanding this layout. I would like to add some more tracks to the bulk liquid terminal to allow more room in the sidings thereby increasing the capacity for rail cars. To accompany the liquid terminal, I would like to model a gas-chem type tanker. Liz Terkol is a possibility, but I wanted something about 5 feet long, so I may have to scratchbuild it. Is it possible to just get the fittings set for a kit?
