Resistance Soldering
« on: 29 August 2010, 17:21:36 »
Does anybody have any experience with resistance soldering?

It sounds like it would work well in our hobby for things like handrails and other brass parts.

It looks like the equipment can cost around $300 to $500 US.

At these prices I would hope it would be a really good thing.

Thanks much,

Bill M

i can not recall that i have ever heard of Resistance Soldering, i would not hesitate to take a guess what it would be used for, all i know is the normal way to Solder and Braise.

The only new type of bringing to metals together that i have see in the past few years is a thing called a spot-welding device from Robbe.

http://data.robbe-online.net/robbe_pdf/P1122/P1122_1-5731.pdf

and i didn't like it one bit, if you don't press hard enough then the parts don't stay welded together.

yes they do work well for what we do.  you can put the solder were you want and have a near
perfect solder joint every time ^^^  a friend of mine has the one in your link and it makes soldering a breeze and with no messy joints. Colin I thought you guys on the other side of the pond not only would have herd of Resistance soldering but would have refined it to and art form by now :wink1:

Hi Tom,

Thanks much,

I would have thought we would have used it more also, but I asked the same question on another model ship forum and a train forum and got only one  response from anybody that has used it.

It just sounded like a good idea.

Think it would be super for doing brass ships rails and other small and close together things.

I must admit I have not come across this either, but have tracked down a UK source and am making some enquiries.
