An enterprising model maker from Peterborough is buoying up sales of an
ageing boat kit manufactured by the mighty Airfix.
Ron Dean (63), owner of Deans Marine, in Farcet Fen, was trying to find
a way to make a small motorised boat and was testing the equipment on
Airfix models.
A test was carried at Peterborough Area Model Boat Club?s boating lake
in Hampton Hargate between Christmas and New Year.
Mr Dean said: ?We put an engine in a plastic kit hull not expecting it
to work, but it did - incredibly well. The boats travelled at a scale
speed of 50 to 60 knots.
?We were absolutely astonished. Someone filmed the test and put it on
YouTube. It went ?viral? among model boat hobbyists and when we
reopened after Christmas the phone was ringing off the hook.
Mr Dean said that Airfix said it had not made the kits for 10 years but
remarkably agreed to make some more.
He said: ?It?s equivalent to us asking General Motors to manufacture a
car you made 20 years ago. Hopefully, it will open up a new market.?
