I use Tamiya acrylic varnish no. X35. Tamiya acrylics have no problems with nearly any other paint (for instance humbrol enamels). You can even use it with waterslide decals. Maybe this helps. I know how you feel now as I have made such an experience too. Don't give up!

i use the humbrol gloss and satin varnishes, for doing my waterslide transfers, must admit its not the spray i use, i use the little bottels for brushing.
i have noticed with some varnishes that if the coat is to thick then it does have a tendence to fog up..

reduce the varnish 2 to 1 with water for acrylic and thinners for Humbrol satin cote and paint with a brush on a test bit, Keep reducing till you get the finish you want and then when dry do a second coat. That should do the Trix
