Waterproofing electrical contacts
« on: 06 September 2011, 11:54:49 »
Hi All

(Hope I am posting this in the right section) I noticed on my boat that most of the electrical connections under the deck have a kind of protective substance on it, like light grease or something. This is obviously to keep the contacts waterproof. What is this stuff? (I don?t know anything about electronics, so this is not familiar to me) For example, the on/off switch?s exposed connections under the deck are covered in this stuff. It is gold/brown in colour, and has the consistency of grease or Vaseline, in other words, it is not set like silicon would do.

Also, where the propeller shaft goes through the hull the entire area is covered in similar stuff, but it is clear in colour, very much like Vaseline. It is also soft, not set like silicon. What is that?

Cheers

it certainly sounds as if your right in your thoughts...

it might be better if you could post a picture.

and it also sounds like this is a ready to run model??

its not something a normal modelbuilder would do...!! apart from lubricating the propshaft
