USS[HMS]Rowley
« on: 23 January 2021, 21:02:29 »
Hi everyone,
My father served on HMS Rowley [a "Captain" Class Frigate] during WWII from 1943 to 1945 when it was returned to the USA. The ship saw action on D day as a picket for Battleships firing on shore positions, Anti Submarine action in the Bay of Biscay and arctic convoys to Russia.
My son bought me a set of 60th scale model plans of Rowley for xmas. I have nowhere to build a model 61" long but I found Deans Marine can supply a  fibreglass hull of Rowley at 96th scale, 37" long, which I think would be manageable if I can get the plans rescaled to suit.
I worked in engineering until I retired 6 years ago. I have built toy boats and wooden bird tables etc for the grand kids but have never attempted a scale working model before. I spoke to Ron in technical at Deans and he suggested I joined this forum as a starting point.
I would be grateful for any information re this build. Has anyone any experience with 'Captain' Class warships? or can point me in the right direction to get information.
 Many Thanks, Mike Le'Mon.

Ron, Have you thought about putting your prototype into production? Is it based on the "Buckley" class USN escort ? I'd certainly would like one.

Hi
They ware planned for this year along with the Captain class version but all new release have been held up.
We have buried 2 members of staff from the covid last year and another is in a home with mental problems and with no use of his legs,
another had to hand in his notice after 20 + year service to take care of his mother when his father passed away.
That is 65 years in total experience in this business lost.

We are all getting on in years in here, and all it took was one  prat customer to come into the factory early on when he had the symptoms, but as he had not had a test, it did not matter  as he was fine ?

So we are very short  experienced staff, 2 new ones who have been here less that a year and us older ones can not be to close to them, in case, so teaching them is hard work, and they will, and do, make mistakes that get by us.
we are working 12-14 hours a days 7 days week just to keep running,  plus
we are now in a full lockdown in the country with no travel allowed unless vital ? and with brexit everything  gets to the French border and sits in trucks for weeks as no one understand the new customs forms, even if they have them ??
So bear with us and when sanity returns we will get on to them ?
Ron

Sorry to hear this Ron the covid outbreak has put a lot of things into perspective and all we can hope for is some sort of normality returns some time this year. No doubt you will be able to pursue your planned projects sometime in the future and look forward to this. However at the moment keep yourself and employees safe.

Ron, that is so sad to hear, I hope that everyone can stay safe until this is all over. My best wishes to all at Deansmarine, without you working away to supply kits I'm sure a lot of us would be in a worse place mentally as we would have nothing to build and without a focus to give us some enjoyment through these days. Please don't think that I'm being flippant but to me you are most certainly an "essential" service.

Hi Ron,
Thank you for your quote re- Rowley power plant set up supply and the offer of the build photos. I am still in the process of investigating materials I will need to scratch build or what is available to purchase ready made.
I will be in touch soon to order what I feel I need to get the model started. I haven't had any joy getting my plans resized to 97th scale yet, due to the lock down.
I echo everyone's comments and hope you come through this trying time and manage to keep going,
All the very best wishes, Mike Le'Mon
