Title: HDMS Tordenskjold, alternative Type 14 frigate.
Post by: NickD on 21 May 2018, 11:36:20
Hello to all Dean's Marines and ship modelling fans!
I want to present the model which I'm building now. It is strongly based on the HMS Hardy kit. The idea was to find how could be look an export modification of the Type 14 frigate with multi-function capabilities, without overloading a hull. After intense research I came to this design:
Initially it was planned to use British conversion of the US Mk.33 guns, as mounted on HMS Victorious, but unfortunately I can't find detailed plans, so I will use standard closed Mk.33 mount - it will fit well on Danish armament purchase logic too.
Most of the additional details are 3D printed.
The model will have working radar, navigation lights and some internal lightening.
This is the progress so far.

Hi. Nice post. :). Did you do the 3D items yourself? The radar for instance.

Hi, Robin!
Some of the details are done by me, some not. I've done the radar by myself, using all available photos, documentation and cosec2 antenna diagrams I found. Unfortunately there were no available blueprints, but i manage to do it without them with satisfactory accuracy.
ASW rocket launcher is done by me too, along with any other details - nosering tunnel, hawse pipes, anchors and wave breaker. I will receive the package next week and I will post photos then.
I also plan to make both new masts and torpedo reloading mechanisms, etc.
You can see most of the the models in 3D here:  https://www.shapeways.com/shops/nick-s-naval-models (https://www.shapeways.com/shops/nick-s-naval-models)
The other models - gun, torpedo tubes and fire control radar were already done from someone else in the same site, so I only purchased them.

Best regards,
Nick

Very nice built, and I would love to see the ship "Fitted" out.

But please observe, that there was never a HDMS Tordenskjold based on a Type 14 frigate.

But I am rather excited, as I over time has collected some more modern equipment (Radar, guns and brigdehouse), for my HMS Hardy model. And why is that? Well. I really liked that type of Frigates, and I really am sad, that nobody saved just one of the Type 14 Frigates. I had the chance sailing on HMS Pellew from Portsmouth to Bergen, when I was a cadet on the Danish sail training ship "Danmark". It was a lovely 2 week staying in the RN. Later I joined The Royal Danish Navy.

Thank You!
I think, the Type 14 frigates were amazing, but IMHO maybe underestimated. I like them very much, and this is the reason I choose Type 14 for base to my model.

Yes, the HDMS Tordenskjold is fictional model, but I tried to do a very careful and thorough research to make my project realistic as possible. I tried to took into account not only historic availability of the used systems, but political and economic factors, and of course (with some assumptions) ship structural integrity, load and internal space (for my regret, Vickers Mk6 gun doesn't seem to fit ).
I checked, that the name "Tordenskjold" is free for that period (1960-1961). The bigger problem was the number, because each NATO country have its own numbers range, and there were no free numbers for Denmark. So I "borrow" the number from the frigate, which must be decommisioned soon. This is not the precedent, because in "real life" HDMS Thetis and HDMS Beskytteren shared the same number (F340).

I can write more about every of the changes from the real project, but i fear I can bore You.

I suppose, that maybe professional modellers may not be very happy with what I do, because it is opposite to "strict accuracy" idea, but my intention was to try to create something different, which can include some creativity from my side. (Too much words, simply I like to design ships!)

Anyway, I will gladly receive any opinions, suggestions and advises, which, i think, will be very useful to improve the realism more!

Hi
Well done a very nice conversion of Hardy, take no notice of the experts and rivet counters, we do this for fun and to make interesting model, keep up the good work as an aside  the most famous of the type 14s starred in a 1960s  film with Norman Wisdom ( shows your age if you remember it) film called the Navy lark ( i think) or ( the Bulldog Bread )
 keep up the interesting project.

Hello,
I found the movie in the YouTube, thank You very much!
It is made more than 10 years before I was born, but it always a pleasure to watch a nice old movie!
I also found two more movies with the Type 14 in them: the monster movie "Gorgo" (1961) and the comedy "Further up the creek" (1958).
Also there is a nice short movie for HMS Exmouth after modernization: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-ua5-gp_9g&index=33&list=WL&t=0s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-ua5-gp_9g&index=33&list=WL&t=0s)

And this is the first test of the internal lighting. It looks too bright, so maybe I need to dim it a little.

I also have a question about navigational lights. According to what I know, the engine driven ship between 50 and 100 meters length must have 2 forward white lights and one white light facing the stern.
I'm not sure is this valid to the navy vessels too, and I cannot figure how many lights have Blackwood class. Can anyone help me with such information?
Thanks in advance!

Concerning navigation lights. I have never heard of special rules for navy ships in peacetime.

At least RDN has now special rules.

Many thanks for all your pictures ^^^

Post by: NickD on 27 June 2018, 22:54:43
Thank You! That was good to know! In this case I'm thinking to represent running lights only. Here I found confirmation, that military ships follow the same rules, as the merchant ships: http://navyadministration.tpub.com/14067/css/Navigational-Lights-34.htm (http://navyadministration.tpub.com/14067/css/Navigational-Lights-34.htm)
Of course, things can be far more complex ( http://www.researcheratlarge.com/Ships/Drawings/ShipLights.html (http://www.researcheratlarge.com/Ships/Drawings/ShipLights.html) ) , but I think it is  too complex to be done and really excessive, especially for fictional ship.

Thank You!
I'm not sure about the antenna. I was unable to find AWS-1 antenna video. Is it rotate clockwise or counter clockwise? Also i'm not sure about the speed of the rotation. I guess it is about 40 RPM. So I placed a trimmer on the motor, so the rotation speed can be adjusted, if needed. I will appreciate if someone can help me with this information.
Title: Re: HDMS Tordenskjold, alternative Type 14 frigate.
Post by: hother on 15 October 2018, 21:34:51
Normally a radar antenna rotation is clock wise. Rotation speed dependents of the use of the radar. Long range radars could rotate rather slowly (Military and aviation radars), and short range radars could rotate rather fast. A multipupose radar rotates about 30 - 40 rotations a minute. :smiley1:
Title: Re: HDMS Tordenskjold, alternative Type 14 frigate.
Post by: NickD on 18 October 2018, 14:35:49
Many thanks! Changing the polarity of the motor is a matter of seconds, i will measure the rotation speed again and will adjust it, if necessary. I'm using the first broken radar for paint tests, but i will mount it for a little and i will make a new video .

The shown radar antenna reminds me a bit, of the old RDN Triton Class Frigates radars:

Yes, the radar is the same, AWS-1 . All four Bellona class corvettes receives this radar during modernizations at 1960-1963.
The AWS-1 was Decca Radar’s first S-band sea-going radar. The product was developed in 1956/7, initially to address a Royal Danish Navy requirement for Air and Surface Warning with Target Indication.
AWS-1 and its 3D stabilized version AWS-2 can be seen on HMS Mermaid, Iranian Alvand class frigates, Brasilean  Niteroi class frigates, Ghana Kromantse class, Nigerian Dorina and ERIN'MI corvettes and also on some asian countries ships.

Interesting project that's coming on nicely.  It's a good imagination of a variation on these often overlooked workhorses.  They were very seaworthy, even if they did roll a lot.  I like your choice of weapon fit to beef up the firepower, particularly the A/S launcher forward but I do recall the original third Bofors on the quarter deck of type 14s was soon removed as it was virtually unusable in any sort of swell. I think if they had been exported to a NATO navy, other than the Indian exports, the weapons and sensors would have been changed, a bit like Dutch Leander's such as the Evertsen,  so your thinking wouldn't be too far off the mark I'd guess.  I look forward to seeing your progress.

Post by: NickD on 08 January 2019, 22:16:46
Thank You all for the kind words!
About the third Bofors, I read about that, so I tried to find better position for the 3 in guns. It is one deck upper and moved close to the center of the ship as possible, but without sacrificing of the firing arc. Unfortunately there is no many free space in such small ship, and i cant figure better position. I tried to calculate metacentric height too, but my data is quite approximate. Abstract from that, i saw nothing dangerous, compared to the real variant.
I hope the project will go on faster, when I finish with the decks. All other detail added will be easily visible, then. I have some tiny Neodym magnets to be used for deck hatches locks. Also I plan to add an antislip Chequer Plate surface to the foredeck, close to the Deans blueprints.
I will post the results as soon as i made it!

Hello again!
Sorry for my long absence - some medical problems and a lots of routine responsibilities.
But work still goes on, even it is somehow slow.
There are some of new things done:

A pair of Oerlicons for fishery protection.
I found a place for them on the central superstructure, near the fire control radar.

3d printed, designed by me rear running light.

Rear running light working. Still not painted.

An example of deck hatches magnetic locks.

Improvised paint workshop. Rudder is ready, main gun internal parts on primer,
rear running light received paint too.

Main deck ready.

Rear superstructure 3D-printed by my friend.
The starboard blast screen replaced. You can see part of the old style blast screen on the port side.

Antislip coating glued to the foredeck.
Horizontal RC anttenna is visible too.
It will be masked with ASW mortar.

Rear superstructure with the main gun partially painted.

Main gun partially painted, You can see gun sight and control panel too.
A very little of them is visible, so I decide not to 3D-print them, but to make them scratchbuild manually.

Another view of the main gun.

Sorry, I saw a little late, that that you do mention HDMS Peder Skram. Actually the 2 Frigates was Destroyer types, but due to political problems, they could only be classified as Frigates.

That was strange to me, such a powerful frigate... Now I understand, thank You!
I try to use maximum of existing ships as reference to have realistic and detailed exterior. Such detailed photos are very difficult to find, I have only 6 large and clear photos of Type 14 frigates, which I consider as treasure! The way-out of the situation is to use photos from real museum ships of the era. So I use widely HDMS Peder Skram, HMS Cavalier and HMS Belfast as reference. I found many photo tours with close up photos of some details like lamps, loudspeakers, phones, junction boxes etc. Some of these details I already made as 3D-models for printing, others still waiting.
I also fixed a little the color of the Boforses, making them not so chocolate like :) The problem was, that my paint looks dull initially, but applying the varnish give me unexpected effect on this specific paint. I already fixed that and can post photos later with more realistic color of the domes, along with some other new details ready.
Have a nice day!

Prototyping of the central superstructure - first iteration (paper). A height of the standard director platform seems to be not enough. Another half of a meter will be needed. Oerlikon nests used raising tubes, because these guns intended to engage surface targets. Maybe i can add safely another 30 cm width each side to ensure a little more space for the loader to operate easily. Now ammo storage rack is single, for both guns, maybe i can enlarge the ammo rack platform to the funnel side and add there one or two more ammo boxes.
Any suggestions and corrections are welcome!

The hull is complete, now prepations for the painting goes on. Too much sanding these days. :)
Some other details are ready for 3D-printing, I will order them soon. You can see the bridge and mix of some tiny details - loudspeakers, deck lamps, handrail knobs and two types of rope craddles. More will be ready soon.

A new update: Central superstructure is successfully printed. I received the parts today. I need to apply primer for better visibility of the details. The main mast is paper prototype too and will be replaced. The Huff-Duff and Porker will be transferred to the secondary mast, to free the main mast for the bigger AWS-1 radar. I'm close to start a hull painting, I just need to finish the bow deck edges.

Oh what a nice build ^^^ I just enjoy your pictures so much. Now she has become a real frigate.

Thank you so much for your pictures. Well done.

Thank You very much! The hull painting is very close, so I hope I can show even better photos soon!
But, I have a question, please!
On the original Type 14 frigates, there are a small platforms each side of the funnel. They were used to hold a large number, indicating a squadron to which the ship contains. I can't find indication that similar practice existed in the Danish fleet. I have following options:
1. To remove the platforms at all.
2. To attach the squadron number anyway.
3. To preserve them, but attach nothing.
4. To attach a shield (or square/rectangle/disk) with Danish colors.

I think it will be better to stick with option 4 or 3.
But, what is Your opinion, which will be correct?
I also found photos, where a disk with a hand is attached there. Maybe I need to add something different on this place?
Best Regards!

Hallo again my friend.

The RDN often uses different signs on the funnels. It could be the NATO sign and others, when attached to a NATO group (Minesweepers, Standing Naval Frigate Groups Northern Waters) , which happens all the times.

But The RDN don´t uses signs for the RDN Flotilla they belongs to.

Looking very much forward to even more photos ::DD

Very best regards

John

Sorry for the long delay. Painting goes very slow, too much waiting and corrections needed.

But I hope I will finish with the paint job soon and then I can concentrate at the details.

Also, I decide to make a pennant numbers as a decals, they will look better than painted. A sheet is on its way to the printing.

I had a bad feeling, that something is not okay. That orange color is very wrong!
So, I checked with the original and fixed that shame!

Here are some assembled views.
Please, don't be disappointed from the awful first layer painting and the leaks. I tried new technique with rubber mask paint and i'm still not passed the learning curve successfully! Everything will be corrected with a very thin brush. I'm using self-healing car paints, so I promise there will be no signs from that mess!

Thank You, John!
Can I ask You for something?
We spoke earlier about sound samples. I tried to find Danish Navy "Battlestations"or other sound sample for initiation sound, to replace current US-navy sound, but I cannot find one.
If it does not bother You, can You, please, suggest me something suitable, if You have an idea? Even 10-15 seconds are enough, regardless of the type of the media -  movie, sound file or link.
Best Regards,
Nick

Post by: hother on 26 February 2020, 17:00:17
That is rather complicated. In my Navy days the alarm signal was "Heavy ringing bells" placed all over the ship. Activated 3 times, and followed by a speaker message (in Danish) "Klart skib - klart skib".

Then the Captain or the first Officer informed the crew of what was going on by the speaker system.

If a submarine was detected there was also horn signals. The only problem, we could not do much about the submarines, as we only got the old Depth Charges. About the same in the Royal Swedish Navy, at that time.

To day it is a bit different, as the RDN in many cases has adopted the RN speaker messages. F.ex. "Brace brace Brace for missile impact", I really have no knowledge of the signals any more - sorry

Maybe you have, as we have in Belgium, "Navy Days". It's open days at the navy yard in wich you can visit multiple vessels of various nations and where you can talk to all kinds of military men and women. I'm sure there they will be able to tell you about the signals.

Sorry for the long delay.
but the ship is no more unnamed!
When I prepared to paint the ship numbers, I decide this will be very hard and dangerous task, and the result will be not satisfying.
So I started to think about decals. I made the file, but the decal paper is manufactured... in China!
It's miracle it arrived! Few tests were needed, to be sure that the varnish will not damage the decals. But everything went good from the first time!
The ship's name was a difficulty too. The letters are 2mm high. You can see the toothpick for the scale on the few photos.
The last effort will be for the draft marks. And the time for final assembly will come!
Best Regards and stay safe!

The anchor capstan is the original from the kit, but it is not correct version for this class of the ships, the new is printed and i will replace it, when arrives.

About the ships badge. The RDN has never used eagles to anything. Just look at the history of Denmark, I think you will find out why :smiley1:

Oops! Epic fail! Sorry, about that!  :(
Because i didn't found insignia here: http://www.seaforces.org/marint/Danish-Navy/Corvette/F-356-HDMS-Peter-Tordenskiold.htm
I rely on this picture: http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h440/KWVestergaard/CoA/Denmark/HDMS%20Peter%20Tordenskiold%20template.png~original
Unfortunately now I see this is Norwegian insignia...

It look like I have made a mistake. And I am very sorry about that. I even don´t remember to have seen that badge.  :smiley1:

It was my mistake, as I looked The Tordenskjold on a Royal Danish Navy home page.

http://www.navalhistory.dk/Danish/FlaadensAnsigt/Vaabenskjolde/PeterTordenskiold_1982.htm

And the "Bird" is mentioned as an Eagle. Normally Eagles are no go.

And concerning the Norwegian, naval officer Peder Tordenskjold was a Norwegian and served in the Danish navy. At that time Denmark and Norway was "One Country".

Thank You! I feared that I made a mistake! Creating a new decals actually is not an easy task!  :wink1:
I suppose the badge represents an original coat of arms of the Wessel family, and this maybe is the reason to be so unusual, and the same for both Danish and Norwegian ships with the same name.

P.P. Yes, I found the confirmation, but not the Wessel family coat of arms, this arms was granted to the Tordenskjold itself:

Yes, I plan to make real water test very soon, I hope, maybe sometime in September! Everything is ready for that, all superstructures are fixed on their place (except the radar room an main mast, but deck is still not penetrated, so this will not be a problem for water run)!
Yesterday I put the ballast and the battery again. Here is a video from the R/C dry test.

Many thanks for the link ^^^
Yesterday I was thinking of a conversation I had with Captain of the HMS Palliser many many years ago. I asked him, what he would do if they actually brought a submarine to the surface, using their ASW system. Not much was the answer, as we only got 2 40mm Bofors guns.

You have solved the problem with the twin turret.  :smiley1:

Dear Sir, are the stl files available for the Plessey AWS-1. I'm collating materials for my Father who served on HMS Mermaid F76, which was one of the first ships to sport the unit. Like You I'm having difficulty in obtaining details on the AWS-1 and in 144 scale. Can you help or offer a lead?
