Dear sir,
I am a Japanese RC ship modeler and bought this HMS Fencer about 12years ago from you directly
Just before this  kit had been put into market.
In the beginning, It took too much time to make the  hull so that I was tired with continuing the work.
Consequently, I stopped making the ship for a long time, but restarted again as I retire from business
due to reaching the expected age.
Last month, in such a background she came to be launched at last successfully,
And trial runs have been   made  so far five times  to confirm various function as a
lake-going RC ship.
Attached are some of the pictures taken during the trials.
I am very happy if you kindly get a picture in your “customer model”
Please choose a picture whichever you think best for putting in the column.
Best regards,
Ken Yoda is my handle name

Hi, RC ship modellers :
I have recently completed my HMS Fencer 1/96 successfully, with a net building time
of close to 4 years, although I had ordered this ship about 12 years ago from Deans Marine.

Why I chose this ship, it was its size, not to large and not to small for a 1/96 aircraft carrier for my building room.  In those days, I was looking for a model kit of an aircraft carrier and I coincidentally found this kit on the website of Deansmarine. Soon after I placed the order with the company.
As for building, most of time was spent for hull assembly and after launching, it was rather enjoyable to fit various parts around the hull and flight deck that were mostly easier than hull building.
This model carrier is able to generate smoke from both side funnels and also diesel engine sound as well.
See smoking in the video of the in the previous post
In order to gain a stable cruising on my local large lake, about 13 kgs of ballast are required.
I am ready for final trial run in coming March on the local large lake, which video will be shown here in the Forum.

Happy modelling and bon voyage !!

No,nothing special has been done on her concernig outer appearance.
But I installed smoke generator,simulated engine sound unit as well as
bilge pump.
Title: HMS Fencer 1/96 under breeze in motion
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 20 June 2019, 13:04:07
Hi,RC ship modellers;
I am attching here just a part of HMS Fencer 1/96 in maiden trial run in motion.
She could not make a satisfactory sailing as it was the very first to run after completion.
I think trial run after launched would be much better,as its center of gravity must have been
lower than that of completed model that had many fittings around flight deck
including 12 on-board fighters.
I am studying at this time a better ballast installing plan to make her sailing more attractive.

A model ship generally looks much better on the water as the water will assist
to make some kind of atmosphere in the background.

Hi all;
Today, I 'd like to display starboard images of HMS Fencer,apart fromt those in trial run.
As you see,an aircraft carrier's sides are  most "show place" for many kinds of fittings
installed, unlike other kinds of warships.

Title: Re: HMS Fencer1/96 under building
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 01 July 2019, 08:56:23
Hi all,
Four images below were ,of course,taken in the past.
No.1;shows a display of digital volt-meter which is indispensable for me to enjoy
      sailing on the large lake. This is ,so to speak,a fuel gauge itself.
No.2;shows the status when power is off.Nothing can be  seen.
Title: Re: HMS Fencer 1/96 in smoking from a funnel
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 03 July 2019, 09:56:06
Hi all;
Here you see are images of smoking systems for HMS Fencer 1/96 and their effect in sailing
on the water ,which images were taken in her trial run on the launching day of last summer.
Smoking is made from both sides of funnels of the ship currently.

No1;shows smoking unit
No2;shows testing the unit just before installing aboard the ship
No3;shows testing the unit just after installing aboard the ship in my tiny hobby room
      where was smoky immediately!!
No4 & 5;show actual scenes of smoking HMS Fencer 1/96 sailing on the water.

I felt that smoking was effective to add more realism to RC model ship on the water.

Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 04 July 2019, 05:20:30
Hi;

Thank you so much for kind comment and compliment as well.
Here's some details of my smoking system.

No1;shows a smoke generator itself.A blue part is for induction of smoke,converted from a cap of Bath
      coke.
No2;shows a blower fan to drive an enough air into the generator,powered by 12volt battery.
No3;shows  two major units put on the platform.
No4;shows a servo- motor for switching the unit when a drive motor starts revolving,it is ON.
No5;shows simple piping to the funnel,which I hollowed out for scale realism as well as for smoking.
No6;shows a final test in my hobby room to confirm an enough smoking that needs on the water sailing,
      as the smoke will be thinner by the wind and ship speed on the water.

Sailing  RC ships on the water are really enjoyable as well as building them.!!

Hi all;
Here you see are images of bilge pump installed  aboard the HMS Fencer
to avoid a submergence on the large lake where I normally enjoy sailing.

No1;shows a powerful pump powered with 12Vdc battery.
No2;shows a senser of submeged water.
No3;shows a pair of water inlets
No4;shows a bilge pump installed.
No5;shows a pump test in the basin.
No6;shows a alarm lamp turned ON with red as it has  sensed the water. Right after this alarm...
No7;shows a water started to drain out when testing,soon flooded on my work desk !!!
Title: Re: HMS Fencer,the main structure of bridge
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 12 July 2019, 05:22:46
Hi, all RC ship modellers
Here you see are the images of the main structure of bridge almost completed.
It was very very troublesome to go 0.3mm brass wire through the holes of stanchions.
The diameter of U-shaped layout of stanchions is around 25mm which is so small to bend
the wire neatly around delicate stanchions.
Title: Re: HMS Fencer,radar platform
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 14 July 2019, 02:29:57
Hi,all Rc ship modellers;
Here you see today are the images of radar platform.
This structure is mainly made of  delicate brass etching parts.
Normally,assembly of  this kind of brass parts may perhaps be done
by soldering,but I did it by CA and epoxy.
The reason is so simple,i.e.easy to assemble,able to assemble neatly and precisely.
This structure is so comlicated to solder  neatly for my poor skill.
Title: Re: HMS Fencer,assembly of brass etched mast

Hi, all;

Here you see are the pics of the mast made mainly of brass etched parts.
I built this structure with CA and epoxy as well as radar platform.
This structure is very important because of eye -catching location standing high on the bridge.
Therefore,I spent lots of time for assmbly.

No2;shows the launching site where is 11kms away from my house.
No3;shows to be launched.!Heavy with the ballast weight ,reaching at least 24kgs
      or more.
No4;shows just launched after some adjustment of ballast.
No5;shows the Fencer going for maiden trial run.!!

More detailed motion of the trial run can be seen in the following video footage.
She looked sailing rather faster for her scale speed consequently.

Hi karlgalster;
Thanks a lot for your compliment and an enquiry about 20AAGs.
These guns are fundamentally built from kit parts with some home-made parts
like arm rests and their handles,as they are toooo small to build for my poor skill
using tweezers.
No1;shows  main kit parts.
No2;shows 0.2mm brass wire coiled to make the rings for arm rests.
No3;shows the rings cut into halves to be arm rests.
No4;shows a kit furnished sighting device which is toooo small. See a 6mm BB pellet for reference.
No5;shows the guns with sighting device.
No6;shows the cradles and mounts for the guns.
No7;shows the final assembly of the gun.

Hi Kiyoshi
I agree with Ron, this is an excellent build log. In fact the very good photographs would provide a very comprehensive reference to building an HMS Fencer. Aircraft carrier models due present a challenge in terms of stability. Can I ask you what your model uses as batteries and how you have mounted them? I see you have photos of the main motor and a bilge pump do you have any photos of the interior of the model showing the motors/batteries electronics? I am sure the forum would be interested in seeing your method of keeping the centre of gravity of the model as low as possible. Keep up the good work.  :smiley1:
Title: Re: HMS Fencer
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 24 August 2019, 15:42:34
Hi Karlgalster;
I do thank you so much for your best compliments for me and excellent question to the point.
The question is still so hard for me to make a clear answer, as you see this type of ship is structurally
top heavy as well as large even as a model ship that will lead to unstability on the water just like real
aircraft  carriers.
No1;This is the battery I am using  for a drive motor. 12V12Ah sealed battery  Weight is 4.3kgs.
No2/3/4;There are enough and large opening in the flight deck to pass most batteries.
No5;Ballst fixers attached to the batteries."Both hands"are for anti-rolling countermeasure.
No6;The batteries with the fixers in the hull.
No7;The motor I am usig is top one.The small is 540 class motor.
No8;The drive and steering systems.
 To be continued...
Title: Re: HMS Fencer
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 24 August 2019, 16:08:09
No1;The ballast I am using. A total of about 14kgs are put in the hull to keep  stable
on the water.
No2;This is the designed/planned draft line,but actual draft is set to close to 2cm higher for
compromising between a good appearance and stability on the water.
No3;This is the actual draft which is about 2cm higher than designed draft line.
A countermeasure I am using for low CG is only to deepen the draft more than planned
line,but practically compromisable result for me between a good appearance on the water and stability has been obtained.

I hope these pics will be of some reference for you.

Hi Robin;
Thank you for your response including a compliment on my model ship.
By the way,I am supposed to apply another method to lower the CG in order to
limit the draft line to 1cm deeper from planned line.
The method is well-known and simple to apply for a model ship.
The result and information will be reported here in the near future.

Post by: karlgalster on 31 August 2019, 11:10:16
Hi Kiyoshi

Nice building job on the mast. Do you intend adding some rigging? If you are to add rigging you need to use very thin thread or nylon.
Title: Re: HMS Fencer
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 31 August 2019, 13:12:52
Hi Karlgalstar;
Thank  you so much for your complimentary comment.
Frankly speaking,I am not  scheduled to add rigging at all, as I am intending to
use this vessel as a practically operational model on my local lake.
For this purpose,delicate rigging and arresting wires and their relating parts on the flight deck
are very troublesome to keep on good conditions when actual operation and /or maintenance work
at lake side or at my work room are done.
This model for me has been intended to build originally as practically operating ship on my local lake
regularly throughout  a year.

Hi all;
I made two funnels after hollowing them out to generate smoking.
1st;hollowed funnels The material is resin.
2nd;installed temporarily  before netted
3rd;covered with net
4th;completed with another part attached
5th;smoking test before final installation to the side of a hull.
6th;actual smoking scene on the launching day and maiden voyage!!

The most troublesome was to prepare for the circumstances suitable for painting
this large hull for my narrow garden.
Title: Re: HMS Fencer drawn a draft line
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 11 September 2019, 00:47:18
Hi all;
Here you see today are the photos of a draft line drawn using some gauges as shown below.
These  gauges were indipensable to hold the hull horizontally on both pitch-axis and roll-axis
for drawing precise lines on the long hull.
1st;clinometer
2nd;levels with pitch-axis and roll-axis
3rd;a level put on the central part of the hull
4thl;whole image kept on fully horizontal on the table just before starting to draw.
5th;measure the height of the line....87mm??
6th;drawing started on the starboard.
7th;starboard line successfuuly met with the portside line at the stern  in one time!!!
I was so happy with this result.

Hi Kiyoshi
This is all very useful information on how you built your model. I do something similar for marking the waterline (there is nothing worse than a water line which is not level particularly around the stern or at the bow where the hull shape is difficult mark on) but I am not too confident in the flatness of the surface I use to move the marking pencil support on. Do you have a very flat table top to use or have you something more professional you have access to?

Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 12 September 2019, 13:00:30
Hi Robin;
Thank you so much for your comment and question.
I do not have something special for this kind of works other than a dining table
which has a 1.8m long one piece solid wood top as seen below.
The surface is comparatively smooth enough to move the pencil base on.
I felt that building a FRP hull as precisely and symmetrically as possible was
so important to draw a crisp line around the hull.

Hi Kiyo

I use a very old dining room table - made about 1933 of oak. Its just something I inherited. Our actual dining room table would be strictly out of bounds for model making  >:D.

From your photos your dining room table looks of very good quality. Ideal for marking waterlines .... you must be very persuasive!

Hi all;
Here you see today are the photos of HMS Fencer painted in red at underwater part. ::DD
It was so easy job except some disturbing wind sometimes blown through during the work.
1st/2nd;painting finished
3rd;dryng in the shade
4th/5th;masking film removed
No special problems found fundamentally.
Title: Re: HMS Fencer aiming for a better stability on the water
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 15 September 2019, 06:32:58
Hi all;
Here you see today are the photos of new ballast aimed for an adequate draft close to planned water line
and a better stabiity on the water.
For these purpose,I finally prepared for 4 pieces of lead ingots,each of  which was 2cm high and 30cm long, totalling to 9.7kgs in all.The height and weight are very important to get a well stability for the   hull, and 2cm height can be kept in the hull below the water line by which better stability could be possibly secured.
Moreover,this could also be expected with less weight of ballast as well.!! ;D
This means actual water line could be expected to come near the planned line in the DEANS plan. ;D
1st;9.7kgs  lead ingots in 4pcs
2nd;covered completely with film for RC plane to prevent the lead poisoning
3rd;painted in gray for a good appearance
4th;adhered with non-slip rubber to prevent from moving inside the hull
5th;This sealed battery could be a part of ballast weighing 2.7kgs.
6th;These are the adjusting ballast weighing 1.2kgs in all
Title: Re: HMS Fencer Done it on experiment !
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 16 September 2019, 02:23:54
Hi all;
I have succeeded in getting both purposes of a good stability and a nearly  precise water line
close to DEANS plan with reduces weight of ballast, though on the experiments in a small pool,
 using thin lead ingots mentioned above. ;D
1st;experimental pool for originally for grandkids,overall length is 2.3m.
2nd;set  in the "dock" just before water injection.
3rd;water injection started !
4th;HMS Fencer floated in a good stability and reasonable water line  after some adjustment
    of ballast.I pushed the deck slightly for several times to check the the movements of hull,
   and she showed a good resilience that could be said againt some breeze sometimes blowing
   this day. ::DD
5th; The ballast was OK with 2 pieces of ingots totalling to 4.8kgs except a battery and some adjustig     ballast. Total ballast will be 8.1kg. Present total ballast is about 13 kgs normally and so she succeeded in
slimming largely this time with a good proportion of body.! ;D
6th;improved water line at stern ,about 5mm deeper than planned line
7th;the  same at the bow.
The next will be an actual test run on the water to confirm if she maneuvers well as a scale model
even on the water.  :-\

Hi all;
Here you see today are the photos of the flight deck applied with 4- pieces of
printed sheet decks.
The point I felt to do a good work for applying was to locate the each sheet deck
 precisely before applying,to say nothing of cleaning and smoothening the suface of
the deck in advance as well.! ;)
1st;ready for applying the sheet deck after smoothening the surface of the deck
2nd;placed the sheets temporarily for locating precisely with adhesive paper tape to fix to the deck
 at cut lines....Seen something white across the deck.
3rd;The application over with success! ::DD

seen in the old Royal navy photos. ::DD
In other words,the free-board has become higher. :grin1:

Hi Kiyoshi
 Excellent work, very high standard indeed, one of the best models of this ship I have seen in many years, keep up the information all, very interesting.
 As to the sailing the black line is never seen on a warship. the camouflage goes down and in to the water, this makes it harder to range on the ship from a periscope, so sailing with the black line under the water is correct

2nd;sponson installed.There are four around the hull.
3rd;The bridge
4th;Gun enclosures for 40mm and 20mm AAGs

Here you see are the pics of the hawses and hawse pipes set in my way. :D
1st;Something strange...no hawse !
2nd;Let's make it!  I drilled two holes,of course.!
3rd;What is this for...?? very important part for hawse pipe,as thin end
     of the alligator clip rubber will be expected to refrain the water from
     inundation.! :grin1:
4th;The rubber hawse pipes(soft plastics made,actually)inserted and bonded
  into the hawse holes.
5th;Cut excess parts and made flush with the  hull sides. ::)

Hi all the Rc ship captains;
The hawse pipes are ,needless to say,are very important to avoid the inundation
 when a Rc ship should encounter the rough waters during sailing,,,,
1st; HMS Fencer was torpedoed at bow by an enemy sub....!!??  The bow began to sink..
    She was pitching hard repeatedly by the sudden change of weather during a trial run. :-\
2nd;electric wire

Hi all the Rc ship captains;
Here you see are the pics of a sailing test on the rough water for the model ship.
My local sailing waters are so notorious for rough wave due to the north wind
in the winter and I was eager to know how the HMS Fencer would be influenced
by such bad weather for reference to avoid the serious risks.
1st;being launched on the rough water... :-\
2nd;hard pitching continued... >:(
3rd;The bow went below the water level frequently... >:D
4th;Big waves struck the bow and hull repeatedly by which she moved as if she were
     shouting"Help,help ! and stop the sailing right away" >:D
5th;And I gave up to continue the rough sailing with an order"To port immediately !"
  later on,about 1cm high of water could be found in the hull,which was thought
  to come through the back hangar where was some open space for monitering
  the simulated diesel sound.,,,, :-\

Hi all the RC ship captains;
Here are the pics of the flight deck support frames and hull inside.
There are 5 deck hatches on the flight deck and one at stern for the rudder maintenance.
By these hatches,there are no places unable to be  accessible in the hull actually.
In addition,there is a vast space inside the hull where many gimmicks could be set.! ;D
In my case, they are smoking,simulated diesel engine sound and bilge pump.
1st;Underside of forward flight deck support
2nd;Forward deck support frame
3rd;Rear deck support frame
4th;The deck hatches by which easy access could be done anywhere in the hull. :D
5th;Currently,the open space has been closed at under half part against possible incoming water. 8)

It became worse and worse  from  the midst of the sailing that continued about 10 minutes.
And i was very anxious about her abnormal and hard pitchings,decided to cancel the test run. :-X
1st;Bad weather different from previous forecast :-X
2nd;Preliminary smoking test was good though a little windy :-*
3rd; Careful checks before starting to a little rough water at this time for testing the smoking

Hello all!
   I am getting ready to pull the trigger and purchase one of Rons HMS Fencer.  One concern I have is the difficulty in stabilizing the ship while under sail.  I was wondering if anyone has given thought to using a removable lead ballast keel, much like you would use on a sailing yacht?  Seems to me that with the majority of the weight well below the waterline stability would be much improved.  Obviously when displayed the keel weight would be removed.
  Thanks for all the great ideas and this thread!

1st;Removal lead ballast totalling to 9.7kgs
     4 pieces of 2cm thick ballast were put on the inside deck

Hi all the RC model ship captains;
The pics for today are on comparatively nervous process of applying vinyl deck planking
and deck cutouts.
Because this process ,especially vinyl deck planking,can't be allowed for a failure,or
another vinyl deck sheet must be purchased from Deans marine again. >:D
Moreover,even cutting out the deck hatches are also the same.If faied,the second order

Title: Re: HMS Fencer with 21 onboard fighters aboard
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 23 November 2019, 07:58:08
Hi all the Rc model ship captains;
Here are the pics of 21 Sea-fire onboard fighters,which number is the same as actual one on the HMS Fencer. :grin1:
Currently,I have 22 Sea -fire fighters that I purchased many years ago,as seen below.
I used to enjoy lining  up them on the flight deck ,dreaming of a finished image of the aircraft carrier.
1;apartment house for the fighters ::DD
2;sleeping in each room for the next task... :-[
3;ready for taking off !!! ;D
4/5/6;onboard fighters fully lined up as often seen in USN large attack carriers. ;D

Hi Derek;

First of all,I'm awfully sorry to be sooo late in replying to your kind comment on my postings.
It is because I have been in Hawaii in the Pacific until yesterday for about a week on
 an autumn vacation.

I would be very happy if my postings could be of some help for your building.
I wish you a nice resut of works under building. ::DD
Please post your works of model ships sometimes with some photos here,if possible. :grin1:

Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 30 November 2019, 08:25:10
Hi all the Rc model ship captains;
My HMS Fencer is equipped with a digital display unit of voltage seen through
the black window(ventilation window?) of the hull-side easily at the distance of 2m.
This distance could allow me to know how much of the voltage has been lowered
without retrieving the ship from the water anytime,when letting her pass slowly before me.! ::DD

Hi all the RC model ship captains;
At last,HMS fencer came to need a cradle for building ,as she had been applied
 a fundamental painting which surface must be protected to avoid a damage like scratches. ::)
The cradle is very simple as it is just for use of building! :D
Title: Re: HMS Fencer needed more than 420 stanchions
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 05 December 2019, 00:34:37
Hi all the Rc ship model captains;
I planted more than 420 stanchions all around the hull and flight deck based on the
instruction manuals.
It was a little bit painstaking but indispensable to make her more realistic and attractive as well. :D
1;stanchions supplied in the kit
2/3;painted before planting on the decks
4;try to plant to be vertical from any angles each by each,more than 420 stanchions. ::)
5/6/7;try to be deliberate with tweezers :-\
8;at last,finished all around the ship like this with several days later ::DD
Title: Re: HMS Fencer requested very painstaking work
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 09 December 2019, 11:57:46
Hi all the RC model ship captains;
One of the most painstaking jobs for building was to form the U-shaped handrails
with a diameter of about 17mm,which were attached to the front and the rear of the bridge.
I am originally so awkward that it took nearly a day to finish two sets of the handrails on
 the platforms.I was obliged many times to repeat the same procedures to form the u-shapes
with a tweezers for a neat result of the shape. >:(
1;Before setting the U-shaped handrails
2;Locate and drill the hole positions for the stanchions before attaching the platforms to the bridge
3/4;U-shaped handrails was set finally after many trials and failures by the tweezers. :-\
      It got to nearly noon,though I had started at around 9;00AM! :-X
5;Rear platform for a search light
6;Both U-shaped handrails were set on the platforms at last in the afternoon.tired but glad! ^^^
  Sometimes in the process,I got irritating about my clumsy hands.  >:D

Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 13 December 2019, 10:55:53
Hi all the Rc model ship captains;
Next job I am adding to HMS Fencer is to increase more realism and atmosphere
on her.
For this purpose,adding many crew figures to be put on various places aboard the ship
is indispensable.
I am currently preparing 30 RN sailor figures for her,but photos shown below are just our
old Japan Navy sailor figures at 1/100. (I am so sorry!) :o

I put them for fun and games.! ;D
Please enjoy the atmosphere of the model ship. :-[

works of this escort carrier. ::)

Outstanding work!  I have a long way to go before I get to that point.  I am in the process now of installing running gear.  Question though....did anyone else have issues with the rudder?  I found mine has a bent shaft and the two halves were not joined properly, looks almost like a Beckett rudder.  As I have an unusable rudder I am in the process of creating a mold to cast my own.
   Anyway, am following your build very closely and am using your photos as well as the kit photos for reference.  Keep up the great work!

Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 20 December 2019, 08:45:07
Hi all the RC model ship captains;
Currently my HMS Fencer is operated by very few deck crews due to a shortage of personnels. :-X
That's why even a navig ation officer has to operate a deck vehicle,to make the matter worse,
Japanese zero fighter pilots and deck crews are in service. >:D
Very contradictive scenes are seen aboard the ship. :-X
1;Even an officer is operating the deck vehicle... :o
2;Something contradictory...Japanese crew is working,,, >:D
   BUt he will be replaced with genuine RN crew in the near futue.! ;)

Hi
 Split rudder is not faulty or bad casting they were fitted with a split rudder to reduce drag on long voyages, welded together and filled with concrete for speed of construction.

Hi all the RC model ship captains;
They have come here at last for service aboard to replace foreign crews now on the flight deck.
But they are not formerly dressed up as genuine WW2 RN sailors yet at this time.! :-X
It will need more time to study their uniform colors as they were in those days. :-\
1;They came up here kept securely in the cell like space for prisoners. ::DD
2;one gunner ?just released.
3/4;personnels in charge for weapons?
5;deck crews?
6;whole crews to serve on the HMS Fencer , totalling to 30 men.

Title: Re: HMS Fencer adopted a small but useful idea!
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 27 December 2019, 07:49:42
Hi all the RC model ship captains;
 That is,to put it simply,to make the structures detachable for easy transportation,
 storage, handling, modification,improvement and repair of a model ship.
Take my HMS Fencer for instance.
The main mast and SK radar antenna have been made detachable as they are
so delicate and tall  that they are usually detachaed from the base structure to avoid some damage by careless touch. ;)
Title: Re: HMS Fencer's lattice mast is also detachable
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 29 December 2019, 02:50:00
Hi all the RC model ship captains;
Two stepped detachable style was adopted for the whole mast on the bridge.
This was done in order to clear some possible hight or space limitation of the storage or transportation.
As she has been built as a RC working model ship for practical sailing on the water throughout
a year, this kind of detachable style of structure is much useful for me. :grin1:
If necessary.even a whole bridge could be detached from the deck-side by removing a tiny screw.

Hi all the RC model ship captains;
It's the New Year's Eve today, thus this will be the very final post for this year for me.
I found a tiny damage at the safety net recently when checking the hull as she made
many sailings this year, for which she was obliged to carry out of my hobby room to the
sailing spot 11kms away. 8)
The damage may supposedly have been caused during such activities,like touching something..

Have a Happy New Year to all far from Japan with many thanks! ::DD

Title: Re: HMS Fencer transported by a normal size car
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 03 January 2020, 11:02:01
Hi Ron;
A great thanks for your comment and compliment on my post.
My "transporter"for HMS Fencer is Japanese Toyota ISIS in Japanese designation
with the length 4.65m and 1.7m width,which is much smaller than Toyota Previa T-spirit.
But luggage space could be available with 1.9m long from the back of driver's seat. ::)
I selected this car for this size to carry HMS Fencer which net length is 1.62m,as you know.
Here are the pics for reference.

Title: Re: HMS Fencer's keel build
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 31 January 2020, 13:57:08
Hi all
I laid down a keel and cross beams as shown below based on the instruction manuals
faithfully, mainly using two component epoxy adhesive(one hour type) and sealed lead batteries
 as weight and sufficient time for drying.
And I also varnished the wood parts for water resistance.

Sailing conditions are not always ideal for a RC model ship...
Pay attention to the countermeasures prudently against watertightness. :-*

Hi all the Rc model ship captains;
Here you see are the pics of the side sponsons installed with the handrails along with the edges
of the sponsons.
It took comparatively much time to set the rails as the edges were curved, which caused me nervous
to bend neatly the wires and pass them through the holes of many stanchions. :(
But it is indispensable and essential work to add more realism to the model ship,especially for the warships.

Hi Tjorven;

Thank you so much for your kind comment. :grin1:
Our country has also beeeen suffering from notorious corona virus
after it was found.
But it is said here that going to such places as jammed with many people is not allowed
to avoid the infection from the virus,while open-air space as shown in the above lake side
is not generally prohibited to go....
In this sense,I am happy to be able to go to the lake for sailing whenever I have such spare time
as to go. ::DD

Under the blue sky....She sails on the lake today too...??  :D

Hi all the RC model ship captains;
Here you see today are the pics of the ladderways to be installed along the sides of the hull.
These ladderways were made from the kit-furnished parts and comparatively easy to build.

Hi Ron;
Thanks a lot for your high compliment and encouragement as well for my love of HMS Fencer 1/96.
She has beeen working very well not only as an object on the shelf to appreciate her appearance
,but also sailing stably even on the large lake.!! ::DD
More improvement is now under study to make her more attractive and stable as a RC working model ship
on the water, as much better than as seen in the following video. ;D

Hi all the RC model ship captains;

It was one of the easiest to work with these life rafts as they needed just to paint actually
 and to install around the hull as shown below,just like what I call"plastics models".! ;D
Title: Re: HMS Fencer's main mast under assembly
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 14 April 2020, 12:47:29
Hi all the RC model ship captains;
These are the pics of a main mast under assembly using mainly brass etched parts
furnished in the kit.As you may imagine from the pics,these parts are sooo small  that the builders have to be patient with the assemly works. :D 8)
1;Starting from these tiny parts,,,very delicate,,,
2;The assembly took delicacy to lead to a good result,,,
3;idem
4;A plastics platform was put on ,,,
5;The works went on
6;And on,,
7;And on again as well as patience went on ..
Title: Re: HMS Fencer's main mast built by CA
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 29 April 2020, 07:59:43
Hi all the RC ship captains;
I built all of  these assemlies only with CA ,not soldering which was sooo difficult for me
to form precise shapes  as in the plan.  8)
To make the matter worse.there is only one chance to be able to work the parts in soldering.
which will mostly never allow me to re-work on the same positions.
CA gave me the second or third chance for re-working. ::DD
Bonding strength must be ,of course ,stronger for soldering , but CA made a good job
for these assmblies of delicate parts.

Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 09 May 2020, 11:37:28
Hi all the RC ship captains;
She was sailing on my local lake for a trial run after fully completed in last May, as seen below.
But,she is still sleeping on her shelf for a long time since last October
when two gigantic typhoons invaded our country with a huge amount of rain by which
my local  lake was completely flooded so heavily and recovered in last February.
But this May...as you may easily imagine,the lake was shut down since  last April and
 prohibited the access by people against new corona virus. 8) >:(
I wonder when to come for a happy sailing time for HMS Fencer as seen below..?

Hi Arno;
Thanks a lot for your kind  comment.
It's a high season around  May in Japan for sailing in a sense,not too hot nor cold..
I will wait for the time to come even if it may be long,as I waited for 12 years including
many interval periods to complete the HMS  Fencer. ;D

Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 22 May 2020, 11:01:53
Hi all the RC ship captains;
There were many etching parts for HMS Fencer,most of which were very small so that
it was very troublesome to assemble them  precisely as in the plans.
In these cases,the bamboo tweezers were helpful to hold the parts securely other than the metal
tweezers.
1;The etching parts for HMS Fencer

Hi all the RC ship captains;
It is getting into high season here in Japan for model boat sailing regarding not only
weather conditions, but also anti-corona virus improvement conditions,as our government
recently announced the release from the Emergency conditions statement.
The statement is expected to permit going outside  partly and gradually with a little conditions
in the very near future.
The photos are HMS Fencer "in operation" flying the White ensign proudly on the water ;D :D :o

Hi all the RC ship captains;

I made two sets of anti-air and surface observation binocularts to be installed on the fore cat walks
as they were shown in the plan.
They were too small to make by my hands and eyes. 8) :(
1;Binoculars made and installed on the cat walk. attention to the shadow observer who was put

2;But he was not appointed to be an official observer due to the pose.! :D ;D

1;After weighing the anchor,she left the assembly point silently leaving a wake at dusk.
2;In the background is Greenock where she embarked 14 Sea fire fighters.
3;She was just sailing on the Clyde river.

Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 24 June 2020, 08:54:23
Hi all the RC ship captains;
She has beeeen put in mothballs for nearly 9 months on her bed,partly because gigantic typhoons
and partly because new corona virus. 8) >:( >:D
From this month,we are allowed to go outside,especially to be able to go far beyond the prefectural
borders.This is because I have started to prepare for sailing of HMS Fencer sleeping deeply on her bed
for 9 months.!!! Moreover,it is already entering the best season in a year for sailing a model ship/! :-[
The photos are the conditions of checking the Fencer after drawing her from the bed.
1;She has been  sleeping silently for 9 months. ;)
2;Then she was drawn on to the work desk.

Hi all the RC ship captains;
Today's photos are HMS Fencer loaded and placed with 20 Sea fires like an USN largescale attack carrier. ;D
According to my own information on real HMS Fencer,fully loaded number of planes are 21 though I loaded
20 fighters this time,another 1 Sea fire not assembled yet. ;)
Of course,I will not load the 20 planes when actually sailing,as it will surely be troublesome to operate
her on the site.  ;)
Title: Re: HMS Fencer in mothballs released to sail
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 30 June 2020, 04:59:31
Hi all the Rc ship captains;
I have checked her the inside of hull if she works normally as done in last September,
as she has beeeen sleeeping for such a long time on the bed proper to her,due to corona virus and typhoons. 8)
The result is OK with the simulated engine sound and smoke genaration. :grin1: :-
1;Opened the deck hatches for checking the inside
2;Both main motor and bilge pump motor worked well.
3;Rudder linkage operated normally.
4;Various ballasts ,grey ones are the basic ballasts and the rest for minor adjustment
   depending on the wave conditions and so forth.Basic ballasts are 9.6kgs
5;Inside of hull lookig to the stern direction.Right silicon tube is for a drain from the bilge pump.
6;The same as above looking to the bow direction.The ballasts are put on the platform about
   5 cms below the planned waterline.
7;Switch on and digital volt meter is diplayed as shown which is clearly seen from "the captain" at
some meters away from her when passing closely. :D
8;And switch off with everything done as expected with success. ::DD

This kit of the large hull is so awesome that a modeller could do anything on her if he should  intend
to do so depending on his ideas, passion and time.

Title: Re: HMS Fencer put on the riggings
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 08 July 2020, 05:00:14
Hi all the RC ship captains;
I added minimum riggings to the island structure to get more scale realism.
1;The island structure has been contrived to detach into 3 pieces for the convenience of   transportation,maintenance,storage and further refits. This time , I detached for rigging work.
2;Very tiny handmade parts were installed along the yard.
3/7;completed as shown,this is a minimom rigging for the island structure.
    I am reluctant generally to apply the rigging itself as rigging is thought to invite some trouble when operating the ship on the site and easy maintenance work at my hobby room. :o
That's why "minimum" which I think will not possibly generate such troubles.

Title: Re: HMS Fencer 's elastic aerial lines installed
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 13 July 2020, 13:15:08
Hi all the RC ship captains;
I added two aerial lines on starboard as seen below.
These lines are made of threads and rubber threads to avoid a breakage of the yard
by unintentional touch of the lines by hand or arm when operating the ship
at the site of sailing or at my hobby room.
The lines are so elastic, and detachable for easy maintenance of the model.
Moreover,the lines are always kept tensional due to rubber thread. :D
1;Elastic lines by rubber partly used . :grin1:

Hi all the RC ship captains;
This time,port whaleboat was strapped with a belt to add more scale realism
as shown below.

Hi all the RC ship captains;
The rigging work is now complete provisionally as follows.
After the rigging work,she has become more impressive warship than ever before.
I felt a rigging work was indispensable to get more realism,needless to say,for a model ship.  :grin1:

Hi Tjorven;
Thank you so much for your kind comment.!
I am wondering what else I can do to this model since I have done almost of all
fittings in the plan of the kit,moreover I am really unable to get more information on
the ship which will be of reference to add more details.
In this sense,I think all that I can do possibly to her further is just sailing.!! ;D :D
Or I have to find such information as to be useful for more detailing or refitting.. :-[ :o

Different plane load-outs? (Swordfish torpedo bombers), planes being re-armed and refueled,  :wink1:
That way you can sail every time with a different loadout
Title: Re: HMS Fencer
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 19 July 2020, 11:45:31
Certainly,it's an interesting idea.!
But,to tell the truth,there is no more space to add other planes on the flight deck
as the vacant space is used just as the hatches often opened and shut for maintenance. :D
Moreover,replacing the planes will cause the damage to the landing gears of delicate
plastics planes that are fixed with double-sided adhesive tape to the deck. :wink1: :-\

By the way,are you enjoying to sail frequently with the destroyer you posted the other day,that looked so powerful even on the rough water.!!

They are 44 sailors in all currently working hard aboard the ship everyday to add
more realism.Thanks to their existence,this model ship has been surrounded by
something organic,heartwarming and vivid. :grin1:

Hi all the RC ship captains;
HMS Fencer for today are the pics in which she is sailing on the realistic waves.  :grin1:
Attention to the waves which are comparatively small.
Generally speaking,smaller the waves are,more real the model ships look on the water.

Hi all the RC ship captains;
Here you see today are the pics of the drive motor installed in the hull and its powerful effect giving the 24kg-carrier a dynamic motion and propulsion even in the rough water.
1;The above is the motor and another is 540 class motor for comparison.
2;The motor is installed like this.Direct drive is very simple for maintenance
and less mechanical troubles,though it gives her sufficient power as seen below.
3;A screw propeller of 63mm diameter could be driven adequately and sometimes powerfully by the motor.
4;I am seeing her off anxiously... :D
5;She showed a powerful motion making a large wave at stern by the motor at a little higher speed.The wave looks larger for its size when viewed from the back. :-[
6;Close encounter! :D
7;Stable steering to port.
8;Returning to her homeport safely and calmly,,,, ;D

Hi all the RC ship captains;
Here you see today are the pics of HMS Fencer leaving impressive wakes from her bow and stern.
1/2;She is leaving two kinds of wakes impressively,from bow and stern.
3;She is sailing straight forward to her homeport at higher speed.? :D :)
4;She is starting to steer starboard loosely.

Hi all the RC ship captains;
I was so much surprised at the video of Leif's ship sailing well with regard to
her stunning stability for a so called top- heavy container vessel like an aircraft carrier.! :grin1:
I felt something heavy possibly set inside the hull.
The followings are the pics of my HMS Fencer sailing stably on the moderate surface
and a little rough surface.
1/2;on the rough surface
3;Quick hard to port finished at comparatively high speed.
   Attention to the long wake and fierce waves generated by the screw prop. :grin1:

If I were living in UK,I may have attended Deans Marine Open Weekend meeting.,,, :-\
And I could have a good time with many RC boaters for various topics on the RC vessels as well as have a chance to observe Deans Marine model ships in the show room.....
Have a splendid time to those who to attend the meeting. ::DD

My HMS Fencer is sailing on a choppy day.This level of choppy surface is rather
adequate for a realistic sailing for her. :grin1:

HMS Fencer left her home port for another mission sailing after intensive check
as she has been sleeping in mothballs on the bed.... ::DD
1;She has been sleeping for many months on the bed.
2;Control equipment worked well.
3;Digital display of voltage showed correctly.

Hi all the RC ship captains;
My HMS Fencer was released from the mothball continued for many months to sail again on my local lake this summer.Every part of the ship was well kept as she had been as she was originally completed last year. ::DD
But,the lake was still under reconstruction due to heavy damages suffered from a huge typhoon passing over our country on last Oct,,,  :'( >:D
I found this status by previous checking a few days prior to actually going to sail. :-\

Hi all the RC ship captains;
I have 21 Spit Fires at 1/100,among which 14 are aboard as shown below.
To my regret,none of them are propeller spinning at this time. :'(
I want one at least that is spinning a prop powerfully as a Zero Fighter as seen below. :-[
In such a circumstances.I found a very small motor like the size as shown below.
The size is sufficiently small for the 1/100 Spit Fire fuselage as shown below. ::DD
I am so excited to know about the small motor as to realize my desire in the near
future if my skill and ideas should get to the required craftmanship. ;D?
I have an idea to fulfil a prop spinning fighter with a tail gear up.

Thanks a lot as always for your kind comments on my postings. :grin1:
A aircraft carrier model is so enjoyable in the sense that we can enjoy both the
ship model itself and the airplanes craft and/or their layouts on the deck ,according to

Hi Tjorven;

I found the motors on the internet of the Amazon.
They are sold a set of four with the price at about USD13 in four incl shipping
worldwide.
The sizes are shown in the pics below.
Overall length is 17mm incl the shaft ,4mm diameter,which are very small.
I got them yesterday after seven days since ordering.
Hope these help your motorised torpedoes project. :smiley1:

Hi all the RC ship captains;
A Sea fire onboard fighter is now undergone to have a motorised spinning prop
from its beginning of the assembly.
1;Compare the motor with the AA battery.
2;Sufficient space for the motor.
3;The inside was reshaped for installing the motor.
4;The motor shaft is long and small enough to extrude from the nose that I decide to
  drive the  prop directly. :grin1:

Title: Re: HMS Fencer
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 03 November 2020, 07:05:38
Hi all the RC ship captains;
The progress for today of the motorised spinning prop is as follows;
One of the check points to pass securely is a drilling work through the prop shaft
with 1.5mm diameter. And 0.7mm hole has to be drilled securely through the shaft
as the motor shaft is 0.6mm diameter.Unless I do it successfully,this project of the motorised prop will be pessimistic nine cases out of ten... :'( :-\
1;1.5mm diameter prop shaft and 0.6mm motor shaft.Direct drive of the prop is under way as the motor shaft is long enough to make it possible.
2;I tried drilling using a spare prop for practise before the original prop.
3;And I took two steps to drill the holes to get the final 0.7mm diameter.The first diameter is 0.5mm.Both props were done successfully with 0.5mm diameter as shown below.
4;This one is the original prop...prudently and slowly... 8)
5;And I got it finally on the both props passing the first check point securely as shown below!!! ^^^ ::DD ;D

Title: Re: HMS Fencer to the next stage

Hi all the RC ship captains;
I attached the props to the motor shaft to confirm if they fit neatly ,and spin
securely and safely without flying away from the motor shaft by high speed motor
rotation.As I did not use CA to bond the props to the motor shaft since possible
change of another prop, due to unexpected damage in the future.
The result was all right !! ::DD
The props spinned  so powerfully generating the sound like flying bees or mosquitos like boooooon,,,, ;D

Yes,! No flaps have been deployed at all despite that it was just before taking off.!
And I added them to the trailing edges of the wings as shown below. :grin1:
1/2;No flaps ...
3/7;I added like these....
These flaps may possibly add more scale realism to the take-off scene of the fighter and dynamic atmosphere aboard HMS Fencer. ::DD

Hi all the RC ship captains;
The second motorised prop fighter was completed and laid on the flight deck
as shown below.
This fighter is not taking off now,but just waiting to take off with the tail gear
down in touch with the deck.So wiring not only inside the fuselage,but also through
the deck was easy and a scale appearance seems comparatively kept well done.
1;The second is complete! :grin1:
2;It was laid on a definite place of deck hatch.
3/6;The deck hatch was set on the definite place on the flight deck.
     The second fighter looks rotating a propeller powerfully as if it were
    just to start a take-off as No2 fighter following the No1. ;D :D
7;No1 looks just like the take-off at the front deck. :) ;D
Enjoy and imagine the scenes tense with the take-off of the onboard fighters. ;D

No2 fighter rotating its prop so powerfully for starting to roll for the take-off
following the No1 fighter.!!   ;D
By the crew added,some kind of vivid atmosphere on the flight deck may have  possibly been generated to some extent.

Hi all;
I found this trolley on the internet and soon bought for my HMS Fencer.
The size and structure seemed to be just Ok for my image as the transport trolley
to carry the ship to the shore safely.
Of course, some modifications and reinforcement might be necessary to make
it available as an adequate transporter for practically routine use.
A handle and some frames are detachable and max length is about 135cm made of
aluminum.

Seeking for the best stability as an operational RC aircraft carrier model,coming April
will be a new starting point to get the literally completion level as I am expecting her to do it.....I wonder when she could successfully get to the point which I think final and goal of this build,since a good sailing quality is a part of "the build" in my thought..? ;D ::DD
Unless this is accomplished,improvement for the quality may continue...as this is intended as a RC operational model for sailing regularly once or twice a month in my plan from the beginning.
I addition,my local sailing lake is so large for her,stability in many meanings is
indispensable. :)

Looking at the video I think you have got the ballast as best you can have with a 1/96 scale. I have found the larger scale normally sail better my 1/35 scale S boats have little roll even at speed where as my 1/72 flower class does ( the actual Flower Class rolled badly). You have created an excellent model that not only looks good but sails well.
Title: Re: HMS Fencer
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 14 March 2021, 13:55:32
Hi Pegasus;
A great thanks for your favorable comment.
But the actual movements are not so good as seen in the video... :-\ :'(
It's a fact that she "behaves"much better than ever before,but some times
she behaves like a tomboy on the water.
In this sense,I am seeking for the good stability always on the water fundamentally.
I have a good idea to improve better stability by replacing with more lead ingot
than heavy sealed battery. The ratio between lead ingot and sealed battery will be
adjusted from coming April by which I expect final goal will come into my hands,since
this is the last I can do to get the goal. :grin1: No more idea except the above...
Title: Re: HMS Fencer
Post by: Pegasus on 14 March 2021, 15:09:37
I have found when ballasting I like to start by placing sheet lead at the stern and at the bow keeping it as low to the keel as possible. Then finally placing it midships at the final build. I do this by leaving a hollow space below the battery box. Are you using the lead acid batteries our club uses these now as weights when gluing. By using lipo or nimh and again keeping them as low to the keel this should help reduce roll.
Title: Re: HMS Fencer
Post by: Kiyoshi Sekiguchi on 15 March 2021, 07:29:31
Hi Pegasus;
Thank you again for your useful information on balancing method.
I used 4 Lead acid batteries in the very beginning after completion for a trial run
,three were just for ballast and  :(the result was terrible on the water. :(
The cause was found to be high CG(center of gravity) due to the height of the batteries.(12V7Ah)
After the intensive study of this point,I finally came to rely on the lead ingot as shown below of about 10kgs in 4 pieces.The result was seen in my previous video. ::DD  A large improvement of anti-rolling could actually be seen even when steering on the lake where was blown frequently by the wind. :grin1: :(
It was the very first for me to build a comparatively large RC ship like this carrier and
this was a merchant ship modified carrier that hull sides were rather high flat top by which securing a good stability became difficult to do.
As you know,flat top has normally top heavy tendency ... :(
But from coming April,some kind of progress is expected using a Lipo battery or a lighter 2.2Ah sealed battery in exchange for a big sealed battery now in use. :grin1:
1;On the launching day,these 15kgs ballast were set ...
2;The waterline was a little deep and she went on straight forward at middle speed
   comparatively good. :grin1:
3;When she steered hard to port like this.... :'( :'( :'(
4;Present configuration of the ballasts
5;These were set like this on the floor which level was about 5cm below the water line.The thickness of the lead ingot is about 2cm.
6/7;Improved water line 5mm above the planned line in the video and from April I intend to lower 5mm down or so... close to the planned line.!!??? ::) :(

Title: Re: HMS Fencer
Post by: Pegasus on 15 March 2021, 13:21:05
It is difficult to get the ballast correct all the calculations go to pot once you start adding topweight like armament this is more pronounced in Carriers with the island and armament overhanging the hull. It is a fine line to get it correct, however you will succeed no doubt about that. Look forward to you final results.

 Hi Kioshi
 Looking better every time I see your work, as an aside the camouflage on ships in the time went below the waterline, there was no fixed demarcation as the black line or colour change gave  a way of measuring distance to a U Boat so sailing with the camo scheme in the water is correct  you may be sailing light anyway
keep up the excellent work

Hi Pegasus;

Thank you for your kind advice,useful information and the encouragement.
Everything on my committing to the sailing quality will be made clear after
coming April through late May during when several tests will be done.
Even now I am satisfied 85 % with the present sailing quality.
I am intending to make it over 90% which is the qualified level for me. :D :grin1:

The U boats were so terrific threat to RN ships to such an extent that even
water lines had to be disguised ingeniously....
Thank you for your encouragement as usual.
