    Torpedo Boat Destroyer  T.B.D. 39.
The introduction of Torpedo Boat (Catcher ) later Destroyer (T B D)  soon to be known as just ?Destroyers?.
The fact that the boat type as such, never was practicable was as a result of its lack in sea keeping abilities.
That being the case, it was only natural to equip the largest Torpedo Boats with the QF guns
themselves to remedy and to Catch their Torpedo boat cousins. The idea never worked as
the boats never had the speed or seakeeping to catch the torpedo boats, so they grew win size and powe
r to become destroyers.
Well before WW1, the boat type was all but obsolete. Destroyers with steam turbines could
now easily outpace the Torpedo boats and attack them with better sea keeping abilities and
a more versatile design overall. The destroyer overtook the narrow duties of the opponent
it was designed to engage and exterminate.
